We have had an extraordinary 2018, combining the Annual General Meeting along with celebrating 110 years of Scouting. The Annual General Meeting is always a great occasion for parents to nominate members of the Executive Committee, volunteer their services and at this event, come to celebrate 1st Purleys’ 110th birthday. We had the honour of Steve French – District Commissioner, attend as our guest speaker.

An awards presentation was held for the children who achieved their Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scouts’ Awards since the last Annual General Meeting held in 2017. The recipients of the Chief Scouts’ Awards are listed on the Roll of honour 2017-2018 document.

After the presentations, we held a BBQ along with cakes, drinks and fun activities for all.

Promise path 2018

Gilwell Park is a campsite and activity centre for Scouting and Guiding groups, as well as schools and other youth organisations. Over the past century Gilwell Park has become the spiritual home of Scouting and holds a place in the hearts of many across the world.

November 2018 marked the 110th anniversary of 1st Purley (Princess Christian’s Own) Scout Group and we wanted to celebrate in a memorable way by engraving a message on a brick and have it displayed for many years to come.

The Promise Path trails through the centre of Gilwell Park, if you have the chance to visit you can find our brick located at the end of the path, facing the swan centre. Over 700 engraved bricks make up the Promise Path and there’s a special story behind every brick.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Come and join our adventure and support your Scout Group!
Our Scout group is growing which means we are able to offer the friendship and adventure of
Scouting to more local young people which is fantastic! This does mean that we need more adults to
volunteer their time to make a difference to our scouting community.

We want to invite you to experience the fun and adventure that Scouting can offer your children, as
well as offering the opportunity to make a difference by helping 1st Purley Scout Group thrive. We
fully understand that you may not be able to help on a regular basis which is why leaders have
parent rotas in place. Have you signed up yet?

We urgently need adult volunteers for Beavers and Cubs, please speak to the leaders to find out
more about the roles available. As Bear Grylls would say, everyone has something they can offer,
whether it’s interfacing with the children, offering admin skills, or sharing an interest at one of the
meetings.

Supreme Box Kart Championship

The Cubs pack attended the Supreme Box Kart Championship on Saturday 28th May, They spent several hours racing and in the final race they came 2nd! The Cubs pack all went home with a medal each and won a stunning trophy… Well done Cubs.

On the Friday night we caught the train to Brockley, from where we walked to the 1st New Cross Scout group. They had kindly loaned us their Scout hut for the weekend. As an additional bonus their Scout night is on a Friday and we were able to join in, enjoying some games and craftwork. The following morning we set off, by foot, to the Greenwich Observatory.

We split into two groups, some going to the Maritime museum, whilst this photo shows the other group after having walked under the Thames ( via the Thames tunnel). The Cutty Sark is in the background, to the right of which is the Southern entry point for the Thames tunnel.

We took time out to visit the Cutty Sark , this was very popular and also educational! On returning to the Scout hut, we cooked dinner and settled in for our annual quiz and some games, including the ever popular Hey Harry. The next morning we set off to Downing street.
